On 13 April, TAURON Polska Energia and KGHM Polska Miedź decided that further design activities concerning construction of a block of 800–910 MW in Elektrownia Blachownia (Blachownia Power Plant) in Kędzierzyn-Koźle shall be conducted assuming the choice of gas fuel.
In the second part of 2010, the working teams established for the project activities, comprising representatives of the partners accompanied by advisors, launched analyses concerning the optimum technical and business variant of construction of the energy block in Elektrownia Blachownia. The feasibility studies performed for both the coal-based and gas-based variant – with consideration to current legal and economic conditions – indicated the “gas option”.
- The analyses have shown that currently gas, due to among others short construction time as compared to coal-based blocks, lower cost of the project and climate strategy of the EU, is the more favourable fuel for the new generating unit in Blachownia, under the condition that PGNiG offers us attractive conditions for gas supply and sales. Within our strategy we focus on diversification of fuels – besides the implemented and planned coal units, we shall construct blocks using gas (Stalowa Wola, Kędzierzyn-Koźle) – informs Dariusz Lubera, the President of the Management Board of TAURON Polska Energia.
The cooperation between TAURON and KGHM Polska Miedź started in April 2009 by signing the Letter of Intent concerning construction of the source of electrical energy generation on the premises of Elektrownia Blachownia, belonging to Południowy Koncern Energetyczny, a company of TAURON Group. A year later, in March 2010, the partners agreed on principles of cooperation on the project. At the beginning of this year, analyses were performed on expected benefits to result from rational change of fuel. In April it was decided that further design activities would be performed assuming the “gas option”.
The Project will be financed from the partners’ own resources as well as based on a loan taken by a new company.
Reconstruction of the generating capacity is the priority for TAURON Group included in the corporate strategy. The document anticipates commencement of construction of new power at the level of 3000 MW till the year 2012. Diversification of the revenue sources and entering the energy sector is also one of the priorities of the strategy of KGHM Polska Miedź for the years 2009 – 2018
