TAURON applied to UOKiK (Polish Office for Competition and Consumer Protection)

On 20 September TAURON Polska Energia submitted application to the Polish Office for Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) stating their intention to take over Górnośląski Zakład Elektroenergetyczny – now belonging to Vattenfall AB. The final sale of GZE in August is subject to UOKiK’s approval.

”Clients will benefit from this acquisition. It will have a positive impact on the effectiveness of distribution services, improved quality of offered products and energy security. The agreement concluded between TAURON and Vattenfall AB is in line with the current trend in the world economy. Today, various forms of companies’ integration are a means to maintain or improve their competitive edge on the market”, said Dariusz Lubera, President of the Management Board at TAURON Polska Energia.

After the transaction, TAURON will acquire direct control over Górnośląski Zakład Energetyczny and indirect control over GZE subsidiaries: Vattenfall Distribution Poland, Vattenfall Generation Poland, Vattenfall Sales Poland, Vattenfall Network Services Poland, Vattenfall Wolin-North and Vattenfall Business Services Poland.

Thanks to the acquisition, TAURON will become the main electricity distributor in Southern Poland. Due to location of TAURON’s and GZE’s distribution grid, concentration will result in increased energy security and reliability of electricity supply to end customers. Moreover, better TAURON’s operational efficiency will help improve customer service and result in the TAURON Group’s offer availability to end customers all over the country, which will have a positive impact on competition.
