Polska Miedź buys green electricity from TAURON

KGHM Polska Miedź bought electricity generated from renewable sources. It is the ”greenest” product on the market at the moment – in 100% generated from renewable energy sources – hydroelectric power plants belonging to TAURON Polska Energia.

KGHM will buy 150,000 MWh of “green energy” offered as EKO Premium product in the years 2012 and 2013. The purchased electricity will be used to cover the needs of the company’s branches. To illustrate the amount of green energy being subject to the agreement, we may say it would be sufficient to enable operation of Legnica copper works for 9 months. KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. uses approx. 2.5 TWh of electricity per year, similar to a city with 150 thousand inhabitants, and is one of its largest buyers in Poland.

“We are a socially responsible company and take care of the environment. It is only one of many examples of KGHM’s environment-supporting activities and proof that we use solutions that are the least harmful to natural environment”, said Dorota Włoch, Vice-president for Development at KGHM Polska Miedź, upon receipt of the eco certificate.

“Today’s handing over of TAURON Eko Premium certificate to KGHM is yet another example of cooperation between the two companies. Purchase of electricity from renewable sources is a proof that the company successfully runs business operations and also takes care of the environment, which proves that it is socially responsible”, said Joanna Schmid, Vice-president for strategy and development at TAURON Polska Energia.

The certificate confirms that Polska Miedź runs its business using energy generated from ecological sources. The certificate issued by Polish Association for Energy Certification is a guarantee that the energy comes from “green” sources. It is an independent organization, the first one in Poland to have developed an independent certificate for ecological energy.

KGHM Polska Miedź through Energetyka (company from KGHM Capital Group) is now considering several projects for getting energy from ecological sources. They include, among others, construction of wind farms, willow plantations and construction of biogas-fired plants.

At the same time, Polska Miedź cooperates with TAURON on other levels. Investments in the power sector play a significant role for KGHM Polska Miedź in terms of diversification of operations. TAURON and KGHM are involved in, among other things, joint construction and operation of a 850 MW CCGT power plant in Kędzierzyn Koźle (at Blachownia Nowa) and in construction and operation of the first Polish nuclear power plant.
