TAURON Dystrybucja signed a memorandum of understanding with American company Altairnano that defines cooperation in the scope of stationary energy storage systems and power stabilization systems based on lithium titanate batteries.
The companies signed the memorandum of understanding that defies the initial analysis needed to determine the scope of implementation of a pilot demonstration system. Thanks to the implementation, TAURON Dystrybucja will gain experience in energy storage and grid stabilization.
- We are aware of the growing role of renewable energy sources in domestic power system and their impact on the grid operation. Advanced technologies for stationary energy storage will be critical for the grid operation, and that is why we are already working on this issue – said Dariusz Lubera, CEO of TAURON Polska Energia.
- Cooperation with Altairnano will help us find answer to the question, how we can actually use energy storage systems to stabilize the grid and improve the quality of energy – said Piotr Kołodziej, CEO of TAURON Dystrybucja. – Application of such systems will be one of the essential elements of Smart Grid, as smart measuring systems alone are not sufficient to guarantee good cooperation between Distribution System Operator and prosumers.
Development of the structure and scope of the future pilot demonstration system could be completed by the end of 2013. The next stage would be connected with implementation of a program covering development of ancillary services for the grid, storage of electricity in off-peak hours (especially from renewable sources of energy) and grid stabilization.
– We are excited to be working with TAURON Dystrybucja to develop a program that will help meet growing needs to improve grid performance and enable more efficient operation of renewable energy sources connected to the grid – said Alexander Lee, CEO of Altairnano. – The pilot program will also demonstrate how our patented nano-lithium-titanate technology is ideally suited for high-power applications because of its ability to rapidly charge, store and discharge energy back to the grid.
